In most areas of the world, it’s necessary to work to make a living.  We start prepping children at an early age to start thinking about what they want to be or do when they become adults. It’s not always easy to know what job field you may enjoy when you’re in your teen or early adult years and that’s alright. Not everyone truly knows what they’d enjoy doing for work.

Regardless of what career choice people make, many end up complaining that they just don’t enjoy their job anymore. They get up morning after morning and head off to a job that doesn’t fulfill them.  In fact, many people dread getting up to go to work and spend the day frustrated, bored, or just plain tired of spending so much time doing something they don’t really like.

Relationship Between Work and Happiness

Many people feel that there is no correlation between work and happiness, but there certainly is. If you’re spending time doing things you don’t like or you’re struggling with job burnout, it’s likely to affect your mood.

Statistics show that 70% of Americans dislike their job to some degree.  That’s a lot of people walking around dreading getting up to head off to work.

I can relate. I have had jobs that I didn’t like.  I’ve taken jobs for the sole reason that I needed cash to pay the bills, but dreaded doing the work.  However, there was something in me that was determined to work toward gaining employment in a job that I liked.

What about you?

How do you feel about your job? Are you loving it? Or are you burned out or simply desire something different?  Is it time for a new career path for you?

It’s likely you know people who enjoy their work. They’re passionate about what they do and feel fulfilled as they spend time working.  They’ve tapped into their talents and seem to enjoy a happy life.

This can be you!

The thing about change is that you can begin making changes any time. If fact, if you’re ready for a career change, you can get the ball rolling with some insights, knowledge, hard work, and persistence.  Whether you want to work from home or in the community, you can start taking steps to make it a reality in your life.

Here are some tips to consider as you embark on a journey toward a career change:

Explore Various Career Options

There are many career options, so take time to explore them.  Research career fields and choose one that you feel will be satisfying for you. Think about your skills and talents.  Are you great with people? Or are you more comfortable working alone?  These things matter as you consider a career change.

For example, bookkeeping is a wonderful career option for introverts, but a career in sales may not be.  Visualize yourself working in a particular field and see how it feels.  What career do you feel most passionate about?

You may even want to talk to people who are already working in a job that you think you’d like. Ask them questions about the job and what they like or don’t like about it. This may help you decide if this is the career for you.

Research What’s Out There

Take time to research jobs you may be interested in.  Google particular careers to see what you need in terms of education, skills, and experience. Check the work conditions and average pay. If you’re interested in working from home, see if freelancing is common in your field of interest.  You want to paint an accurate picture of your choice before making a career change.

Give It A Try

Depending on your career choice, you may be able to try it out before actually making the career change. Check to see if there are volunteer or shadow-work opportunities around your new career.

Persistence Pays Off

Changing careers is a wonderful endeavor, but keep in mind that there may be times when things don’t go as planned. Or, it might take longer than you expected. Be persistent through such times. Focus on what you want and keep forward momentum going to make it a reality. Most people have to start at the bottom and work their way up the ladder. There’s no shame in that. In fact, you can choose to make the journey of climbing the ladder a rewarding one.

Take It One Step At A Time

It might take you a while to come to know what career you want to try next.  Do your research and learn as much as you can about potential careers. Entertain thoughts of doing the job to see how it feels. If you need additional schooling or classes, start jotting down notes of what you need. Then, fill out an application and enroll. If you need funds, seek out scholarships or brainstorm on how you can meet the tuition rates.  Investing in yourself to enjoy a new career can be worth it.

Start taking little steps toward the end goal.  It might seem like there’s so much to do, but if you take it step by step, you’ll get there.

It’s Alright To Try New Careers

Many people change careers several times throughout life.  There’s no rule saying you must stay in a certain job the entire span of your working days. If you’re ready for a career change, start taking steps to make that a reality.  If you need help, simply reach out. In the world of technology, there’s plenty of people and resources available to help you move toward a career change.
