It’s time to move your body!

And most of us know we should but… (and there’s usually a but!) why is it always so dang hard to motivate yourself to move?

Well, if you’re struggling with motivation (Hint: You don’t need it!), you can always use logic to back you up. For instance, we all know it’s generally good to move our bodies, but we don’t exactly know why it’s good or how it impacts our day-to-day lives.

Perhaps if more of us knew the direct impact, we wouldn’t even be able to talk ourselves out of that next gym session.

So, this all got me thinking and researching.

  • Why exactly should we move our bodies?
  • What happens if you don’t move your body (i.e. live a mostly sedentary life)?
  • And how much movement should we actually be doing?

Below, we reveal the answers to these questions, helping you get the movement your body needs.

What Happens If You Don’t Move Your Body?

We are bombarded with the importance of exercise. And yeah, it’s pretty much all it’s hyped up to be. You do live a longer and more healthy life when movement is a regular part of your routine versus not.

However, this doesn’t push many of us to develop a gym routine or make an effort to workout regularly. So, what’s the deal here?

Well, as humans, we tend to move away from pain and toward pleasure.

Not exercising doesn’t offer really any immediate negative effects. Rather, these adverse mental, emotional, and physical effects happen gradually over time, so gradually that we barely notice.

Meanwhile, hitting up the bar with your best friend is an easy and immediate dopamine hit. But with exercise, it takes time and consistency to truly reap the results.

And since we tend to move away from pain, let’s dig a little deeper here to help get you moving! What happens when you don’t move your body?

10 Things That Happen When You Don't Move Your Body

  • You might become constipated or “backed up” (which we all know is extremely uncomfortable).
  • Your joints may feel stiff and achy.
  • You might have an ever-fluctuating mood or become easily irritated.
  • You may struggle to walk up a flight of stairs without being winded or out of breath.
  • Your metabolism may slow, which means you might begin gaining unhealthy amounts of body fat putting you at risk of developing a life-threatening or chronic disease.
  • You place your heart health at risk (The heart is a muscle! And this means it needs to be worked to function optimally!).
  • You may face an increased risk of osteoporosis (a condition characterized by low bone density and brittle bones).
  • You may experience recurring or chronic pain.
  • You may injure yourself more easily.
  • You might get sick more.

Usually, none of us strive for any of the above to happen to us.

Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, it never happens overnight. It’s often slow and gradual.

What Happens When We Move Our Body?

So, let’s end this article on a bit more of a positive note. If you’re not sure why you should bother moving your body, here are 10 excellent reasons:

1. Your memory improves!

You’ve probably heard that endorphins help you feel good during and after exercise. Well, this isn’t all they do. They also help you perform better cognitively, meaning you're less likely to forget where you last put your keys.

2. It prevents injury.

A strong and agile body is less likely to get injured, especially via everyday tasks. For instance, performing lunges and squats in the gym translates over into daily life by helping you lunge to vacuum or squat to pick something up off the ground.

3. You maintain a healthy weight easier.

Increased activity makes it easy to maintain a healthy weight.

Even non-exercise activity can contribute to this. Instead of going to the gym, you can fit movement into your day by taking the stairs, performing yard work, and parking farther away in the parking lot. These small bursts of exercise sometimes truly is where the magic happens!

4. You sleep better.

Research indicates that exercise can be an effective way to treat insomnia and individuals who have trouble sleeping. People who exercise (or move more) tend to fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep or experience fewer sleep disruptions.

5. You have more energy!

When the body faces a “good” stress, like slightly more exercise, you’ll likely build more lean muscle mass.

This can not only help you burn more energy and maintain a healthy weight, but it also means your body is home to more mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of the body’s cells. Muscle cells tend to contain more of these, contributing to increased energy.

6. You boost your immunity.

Exercise can help boost immunity, meaning you get sick less often and get more out of life.

7. You feel better, mentally.

Individuals who develop a regular exercise routine are less likely to develop depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. As previously mentioned, those endorphins also contribute to a good mood.

8. You develop a better mind-body connection.

When you move your body, you strengthen that mind-body connection. This means increased awareness of where your body is in space, as well as increased awareness regarding when something is wrong (such as pain or illness).

9. You improve your metabolism.

Those who move more tend to have healthy metabolic rates. This means, as mentioned above, that you have more energy, as well as helps everything else in the body function as it should.

10. You might just expand your lifespan (and health span!).

Studies show that individuals with higher fitness levels tend to live longer. Not only that, but those in better physical health also tend to have longer health spans, which refers to the years of good health in a person’s life.

How Much Should We Move Everyday?

Most experts recommend moving at least 30 minutes each day. Some easy ways to do this include:

Always use the stairs.

Park farther away than you usually would.

Get off of public transit a stop early and walk.

Walk while taking phone meetings.

Make a rule for yourself: If you can walk to it easily, you won’t drive (For example, if the grocery store is only a 15-minute walk away, figure out a way to make this work!).

Do a certain number of jumping jacks, squats, or any other exercise every time you walk through a doorway or use the washroom or while your food cooks.

Perform yard work or household chores.

Get Moving!

Find ways to move your body that easily fit into your lifestyle.

It doesn’t have to be so complex, such as going to the gym each morning at 5 am. Instead, simply move a little bit more, aiming for 30 minutes a day, and see where you can fit it in! It might not be as hard as you think.

As Gene Tunney has said, “Exercise should be regarded as a tribute to the heart.”
