TREATMENT OF TONSILLITIS IN AFRICA HERBAL MEDICINE BY BABALAWO OBANIFA- Obanifa Extreme Documentaries -Reformed Africa Ifa Spirituality (RAIS)-Herbal Healing Series

In this current work Babalawo Obanifa  will document some of the herbal formulas available in Africa Herbal Medicine for the treatment of Tonsillitis..   The body of the work will present comprehensive information on Tonsillitis symptoms, causes, treatments, prevention, home remedies as explained by different health researchers, trained health practitioners and  medical authors .  In this work I will document twelve different herbal formulas available in Africa herbal medicine for treatment of Tonsillitis .  According to Webmed  team  Tonsillitis is an infection of your tonsils, two masses of tissue at the back of your throat.

Your tonsils act as filters, trapping germs that could otherwise enter your airways and cause infection. They also make antibodies to fight infection. But sometimes, they get overwhelmed by bacteria or viruses. This can make them swollen and inflamed.

Tonsillitis is common, especially in children. It can happen once in a while or come back again and again in a short period of time.

There are three types:

  • Acute tonsillitis. These symptoms usually last 3 or 4 days but can last up to 2 weeks.
  • Recurrent tonsillitis. This is when you get tonsillitis several times in a year.
  • Chronic tonsillitis. This is when you have a long-term tonsil infection.

Tonsillitis Symptoms

The main symptoms of tonsillitis are inflamed and swollen tonsils, sometimes severe enough to make it hard to breathe through your mouth. Other symptoms include:

  • Throat pain or tenderness
  • Red tonsils
  • A white or yellow coating on your tonsils
  • Painful blisters or ulcers on your throat
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Ear pain
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Swollen glands in your neck or jaw
  • Fever and chills
  • Bad breath
  • A scratchy or muffled voice
  • Stiff neck

Tonsillitis Symptoms in Children

In children, symptoms may also include:

  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Drooling
  • Not wanting to eat or swallow

Tonsillitis Causes

Bacterial and viral infections cause tonsillitis. A common cause is Streptococcus (strep) bacteria, which can also cause strep throat. Other common causes include:

Tonsillitis Diagnosis

Your doctor will do a physical exam. They’ll look at your tonsils to see if they’re red or swollen or have pus on them. They’ll also check for a fever. They may look in your ears and nose for signs of infection and feel the sides of your neck for swelling and pain.

You might need tests to find the cause of your tonsillitis. They include:

  • A throat swab. Your doctor will test saliva and cells from your throat for strep bacteria. They’ll run a cotton swab along the back of your throat. This might be uncomfortable but won’t hurt. Results are usually ready in 10 or 15 minutes. Sometimes, your doctor will also want a lab test that takes a couple of days. If these tests are negative, a virus caused your tonsillitis.
  • A blood test. Your doctor may call this a complete blood cell count (CBC). It looks for high and low numbers of blood cells to show whether a virus or bacteria caused your tonsillitis.

Tonsillitis Complications

Complications usually happen only if bacteria caused your infection. They include:

  • A collection of pus around your tonsil (peritonsillar abscess)
  • Middle ear infection
  • Breathing problems or breathing that stops and starts while you sleep (obstructive sleep apnea)

Tonsillitis and Strep Infection

If you have strep bacteria and don’t get treatment, your illness could lead to a more serious problem, including:

  • Rheumatic fever
  • Scarlet fever
  • Sinusitis
  • A kidney infection called glomerulonephritis

Tonsillitis Treatments

Your treatment will depend in part on what caused your illness.

Medication

If your tests find bacteria, you’ll get antibiotics. Your doctor might give you these drugs in a one-time injection or in pills that you’ll swallow for several days. You’ll start to feel better within 2 or 3 days, but it’s important to take all of your medication.

Home remedies

If you have a virus, antibiotics won't help, and your body will fight the infection on its own. In the meantime, you can try some home remedies:

  • Get lots of rest
  • Drink warm or very cold fluids to help with throat pain
  • Eat smooth foods, such as flavored gelatins, ice cream, and applesauce
  • Use a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier in your room
  • Gargle with warm salt water
  • Suck on lozenges with benzocaine or other medications to numb your throat
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen

Tonsillectomy surgery

Tonsils are an important part of your immune system, so your doctor will try to help you keep them. But if your tonsillitis keeps coming back or won’t go away, or if swollen tonsils make it hard for you to breathe or eat, you might need to have your tonsils taken out. This surgery is called tonsillectomy.

Usually, your doctor uses a sharp tool called a scalpel to take out your tonsils. But other options are available, including lasers, radio waves, ultrasonic energy, or electrocautery to remove enlarged tonsils.

Discuss your options with your doctor to decide the best treatment for you.

Tonsillectomy recovery

Tonsillectomy is an outpatient procedure, meaning you won’t need to stay in the hospital. It usually lasts less than an hour. You can probably go home a few hours after surgery.

Recovery usually takes 7 to 10 days. You may have some pain in your throat, ears, jaw, or neck after the surgery. Your doctor can tell you what drugs to take to help with this.

Get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids while you’re recovering. But don’t eat or drink any dairy products for the first 24 hours.

You might have a low fever and see a little blood in your nose or mouth for several days after the surgery. If your fever is over 102 or you have bright red blood in your nose or mouth, call your doctor right away.

Tonsillitis Prevention

The best way to prevent tonsillitis is through good hygiene, including:

  • Washing your hands often
  • Not sharing food, drink, utensils, or personal items like toothbrushes with anyone
  • Staying away from someone who has a sore throat or tonsillitis

There are a number of home remedies that can effectively treat or reduce the symptoms of tonsillitis.

1. Salt water gargling

Gargling and rinsing with warm salt water can help sooth a sore throat and pain caused by tonsillitis. It can also reduce inflammation, and may even help to treat infections.

Stir about ½ teaspoon of salt in about 4 ounces of warm water. Stir until the salt is dissolved. Gargle and swish through the mouth for several seconds and then spit it out. You can rinse with regular water.

2. Licorice lozenges

Lozenges can help to soothe the throat, but they’re not all created equal. Some lozenges will contain ingredients with natural anti-inflammatory properties, or ingredients that can soothe pain on their own. Lozenges containing licorice as an ingredient can have strong anti-inflammatory benefits, soothing both discomfort and swelling in the tonsils and throat.

Lozenges shouldn’t be given to young children due to the choking risk. Instead, throat sprays are often a much better choice for children of this age. If you’re unsure, call their pediatrician.

3. Warm tea with raw honey

Warm beverages like tea can help to reduce discomfort that can occur as a result of tonsillitis. Raw honey, often added to tea, has strong antibacterial properties, and may help to treat the infections causing the tonsillitis.

Drink tea warm instead of hot, and stir in the honey until dissolved. Certain teas may strengthen the benefits of this home remedy. Ginger tea, for example, is a strong anti-inflammatory, as is fennel tea, which can help to reduce inflammation and discomfort.

4. Popsicles and ice chips

Cold can be highly effective in treating pain, inflammation, and swelling that often comes with tonsillitis. Popsicles, frozen drinks like ICEEs, and frozen foods like ice cream can be particularly helpful to young children who can’t use other home remedies safely. Older children and adults can also suck on ice chips.

5. Humidifiers

Humidifiers can help to relieve the sore throat if the air is dry, or you’re experiencing dry mouth as a result of the tonsillitis. Dry air can irritate the throat, and humidifiers can help sooth discomfort in the throat and tonsils by adding moisture back into the air. Cool-mist humidifiers are most beneficial, especially when viruses are the cause of the tonsillitis.

Keep your humidifier on as needed, especially when you sleep at night, until the tonsillitis subsides. If you don’t have a humidifier and want fast relief, sitting in a room filled with steam from the shower can also provide humidity that can reduce symptoms.

When to see your doctor

Certain symptoms indicate that you may need to see your doctor for treatment. Certain types of bacterial infections that can affect the tonsils, like strep throat, require prescription antibiotics for treatment.

You should make an appointment to see your doctor if you experience a combination of the following symptoms:

  • fever
  • persistent sore or scratchy throat that doesn’t go away within 24 to 48 hours
  • painful swallowing, or difficulty swallowing
  • fatigue
  • fussiness in infants and young children
  • swollen lymph nodes

These symptoms may indicate a bacterial infection that requires antibiotics.

Outlook and recovery

Many cases of tonsillitis resolve quickly. Tonsillitis caused by viruses typically resolve within 7 to 10 days after rest and plenty of fluids. Bacterial tonsillitis may take about a week to go away, though many people start feeling better a day or so after taking the antibiotics.

Whether you’re getting prescription treatment or sticking to home remedies, drink plenty of fluids and get lots of rest to help your body recover.

In rare, severe cases, a tonsillectomy (or surgical removal of the tonsils) may be used to treat recurrent and persistent cases of tonsillitis. This is typically an outpatient procedure. Many people, children and adults alike, will make a full recovery within fourteen days.
