One of the great attributes of
Obatala that establish him as Male in gender is the fact that he is marry to a
woman. There are various Ifa stanza that mention different names of women that Obatala
married. Tis can not be listed in a single work like this. But the most
remarkable among his wife that his worthy of documentation is Yemoo. It is believed
that Yemoo came along with Obatala as his destiny wife from heaven. Yemoo is
the major wife of Obatala. Yemoo love her husband Obatala and was
overprotective of him. He always suspect him when he sees him with other
women. Yeemo don’t drink water. She only drinks the
blood of animal to enhance his spiritual power. Obatala is neither a hunter, neither
does he have a gun or arrow . He thinks of what to do to satisfy his wife.He
went to Orunmila who make a magic wooden spoon for him . It is this wooden
spoon that Obatala normally take to hunting. Whenever he see any animal coming .
He will point it at the direction of the animal. All the blood of the animal will
be drain inside the spoon. He will take it home to home Yeemo. Yemoo was not
that satisfy. he was very jealousy. She want to known about all the movement of
her husband. She drill a small hole inside the
pouch that her husband normally take to
hunting and filled with ashes. The second day when her husband carries the
pouch to hunting as he was going the ashes is leaking from the perforated pouch
he carried, leaving a trail to be able to trace him. Yemoo trail him through
this until he was able to get where he (Obatala) was hidden in ambush waiting
for animal that will pass by so that he can use the magic wooden spoon to drain its blood.
He has been on ambushes for hours . Suddenly he heard of foot steps from his
back, thinking it is an animal . he quicky pointed the wooden spoon in the
direction of the noise . Looking closely he discover that it his wife Yemoo. She
has already begin to bleed from her Vigna. Obatala quickly rush her home and invite
Awo to make Ifa consultation, and five female chicken was advised to be offer
as ebo . They both complied. The blood flowing from her Vigna stop. The subsequent intercourse they have result
into pregnancy which solve the problem
of sterility that Yemoo have been previously facing . Yemmo be the major
wife of Obatala is very Obedient and very Close to Obatala he observe all the taboo of Obatala , hence Yemoo as a divinity did not have separate
shrine from Obatala.
WHY OBATALA START TO WEAR WHITE
CLOTH
According to Odu Ifa Ogbe Ofun. Obatala at the dawn of the
creation usually wear black cloth. Odu Ifa
Ogbe Ofun depict Obatala as a warrior. Ogbe Ofun make it clear that one
day Obatla want to embark on military mission to the city of Agbofo Onikin. He
want to reclaim a settlement know as
Agbofo Onikin. Ifa advise him to offer ebo
because of the challenges he will face in his military mission. He was advised to offer the black clothe he wear
as object of ebo .If he really want to be successful in his mission. But he refused.
He say while will offer the clothe that contain his power as ebo. He even
boasted that he will defeat them. But on getting to battle field . He was
incapacitated he can not even lif his hand.
The people of as
Agbofo Onikin defeated him . He quickly went back to make the ebo but it
is too late for him. After the shameful dfeat he said he will never wear black dress
ever again and he commanded his disciple
to do same . On this Ogbe Ofun says:
Ike daa
Ike gbee
Esuru la
O la danu
Ohun to sonu
Emi o ri
O gbe patapata
O gbe pafepafe
Dia fun Osaala Oseeremagbo
Nijo ti n logun Agbofo Onikin
O koti ogboin sebo
Nje Oosala kooran Ewu dudu
Nile logun Oba ti baje lo
Translation:
Ike breaks
Ike become useless
Esuru breaks
It became waste
The things that was lost
I cannot find again
It is lost forever
This was Ifa’s message for Osaala
Oseremagbo
When he was going on military mission
to Agbofo Onikin
He refused to offer ebo
Osaanla renounce black dresses
It was before Oba left the house that the war was
lost.
