7 O Lord, my God, I come to you for protection;
    rescue me and save me from all who pursue me,
2 or else like a lion they will carry me off
    where no one can save me,

We have prayed for repentance, but those prayers have gone unanswered.
Now, as much as it grieves us to do so, we pray for Judgment in this situation.

We know that You know the end from the beginning, and we only want Your will. If it is time for Judgment, Lord, may it come swiftly.
If, however, there is still room for repentance then we ask that You grant a space for that repentance.

"Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.” (Psalm 85:10)

Scripture is full of visions of the future day when righteousness and peace will infuse our world. But Christians should not be content to sit back and wait for that day to come. Scripture is also clear that we are accountable for the havoc we’ve wreaked in God’s world, that we are to work for justice and seek righteousness, that we are to go before God and implore that he will redeem this world already now. Use me, Lord, use even me.

While we know we are supposed to pray for these things, sometimes we don’t know what words to use. For all those who have fallen victim to hatred and inhumanity, for those loved ones who are left behind to mourn, for the souls of those whose hearts are cold, Lord, hear our prayer.
For the children who are being born into this world of conflict and violence, for women and mothers who suffer needlessly, Lord, hear our prayer.
For all those who have been forced into unemployment, who long to return to work, for all those who struggle to support their families, Lord, hear our prayer.

Prayers for Refugees

O God,
Open our eyes that we may see the needs of others;
Open our ears that we may hear their cries;
Open our hearts that we may feel their anguish and their joy.
Let us not be afraid to defend the oppressed, the poor, the powerless, because of the anger and might of the powerful.
Show us where love and hope and faith are needed, and use us to bring them to those places.
Open our ears and eyes, our hearts and lives, that we may in these coming days be able to do some work of justice and peace for you. Amen.

A Meditation on Violence and Prayer
based on Isaiah 58:6-7, 10

This is the fast that pleases me:
to break unjust fetters,
to let the oppressed go free,
to share your bread with the hungry
and shelter the homeless poor.
If you do away with the yoke,
the clenched fist, the wicked word,
if you give your bread to the hungry
and relief to the oppressed,
your light will rise in the darkness.

Prayer for those dying in war or economic chaos

Hear our prayer for all those who will die today because of war and economic oppression, especially the children.

Prepare them for the agony, despair, and terror of the violence that is upon them. Comfort them and hold them close to the bosom of your most Immaculate Heart as they drink deeply of the bitter cup which is forced upon them. Wipe their tears, calm their fears, welcome them to peace and safety. Eternal rest grant to them, and may perpetual light shine upon them. May all rise in judgment against the wickedness that brings this violence upon the world.

Overturn the thrones of tyranny, scatter the unjust, cast down the bloody rulers who make the cry of the widow and orphan rise to heaven. Give us your grace and strength to stand against the demonic powers which prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Grant that peace with justice will come to all the world. Amen.

Prayer for Justice

Dear friends,
in this preparation for Christmas, now at hand,
the Church's prayer for the fulfillment of the hopes
of peace, salvation and justice which the world today urgently needs
become more intense.

Let us ask God
to grant that violence be overcome by the power of love,
that opposition give way to reconciliation
and that the desire to oppress be transformed
into the desire for forgiveness, justice and peace…

May peace be in our hearts
so that they are open to the action of God's grace…

May all members of the family community,
especially children, the elderly, the weakest,
feel the warmth of this feast,
and may it extend subsequently to all the days in the year.

A Prayer for Justice
God of Compassion
You let your rain fall on the just and the unjust.
Expand and deepen our hearts
so that we may love as You love,
even those among us
who have caused the greatest pain by taking life.
For there is in our land a great cry for vengeance
as we fill up death row and kill the killers
in the name of justice, in the name of peace.
Jesus, our brother,

Dear Father,

Our hearts cry out for justice, for fairness, for equality, for restoration. Come, come into this courtroom with us. Come Holy Spirit presence yourself amongst us and within us as we seek to be understood. Reveal the truth, throw light on the darkest places to bring justice. Protect us from the lies of the enemy that seek to pull us down and guard our hearts from anything that creates fear in our lives.

A Prayer that Our Enemies are Brought to Justice

“My heart exults in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation…The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven.”—1 Samuel 2:1,10

Surprisingly, this prayer actually was offered to God in response to domestic rivalry. Hannah was bitterly treated by her husband’s “other wife,” who bore children, but Hannah herself was barren. Yes, in those days bigamy and even polygamy were permitted by God. Of course this was never the ideal, God intended marriage to be between one man and one woman as the creation account indicates. Indeed, the greatest argument for God’s ideal arrangement is that in all the stories in the Old Testament where men had multiple wives, the arrangement ended with incredible domestic conflict!

Because being barren was a disgrace, Hannah felt the taunts of her rival very keenly. So when Hannah’s prayer was answered and she gave birth to Samuel, she felt vindicated and asked God that her rival be judged for her disgraceful outbursts which had been aimed at her heart.

Today, think of someone who has purposefully wronged you or wronged someone you love. It is biblical to pray that God would reward them with just punishment. Often this means that their sin is exposed or that the evil they have done is returned on their own head. David prayed many such prayers against his enemies (see Psalms 35 and 109).

Of course, we do not seek vengeance; that belongs to the Lord; we do not take matters into our own hands, we simply look to God to vindicate us in His own time and in His own way. But praying this way affirms our confidence in God’s ultimate justice. Whether now or later, the truth will win out and hidden evils will be exposed.

Let Us Pray

Father, I pray for ______ that You might expose the evil done against _____ and that the perpetrator might be brought to repentance or else experience the pain he/she inflicted on others. Let them be unable to sleep; awaken them with the painful reality of what they’ve done and judge them accordingly. If granting them blessings will lead them to repentance, then we pray for their blessing. If it must be tragedy that awakens them to the trail of evil they have left behind, then do whatever is necessary to bring to their senses.

Meanwhile give us the sure confidence that You will do what is right and good; let us entrust the evil done against us into Your sovereign hand, and with that, let us be content.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
