MEANING OF OONI OF IFE(OONIRISA)AND HIS POSITION IN YORUBA LAND BY BABALAWO OBANIFA-Obanifa extreme documentaries
In
this work I will examine in detail meaning of Ooni of Ife popularly known as Oonirisa and his
position in Yoruba land. This work is to
shed light on some controversies in Yoruba land as regard the supremacy of
royal throne or stool in Yoruba land. Over the years there have usually been conflict
between between Oni Of Ife and other kings such Alaafin of Oyo ,Olugbo of Ugbo
land etc. who usually contend the
supremacy of Ooni of Ife,base on the fact that Ooni is not an offspring or direct
descendant of Oduduwa. They assume that base on that fact Ooni of Ife cannot be
superior to them and stool of Ooni Of Ife cannot be superior to their stool that
they are real descendants and offspring Of Oduduwa. This area of History I
want to document here is threshold that many people, Babalawo, historian,
custodian of tradition and culture are always afraid to write or talk about.
They don’t want to step on toes. But this land belongs to all of us. We must be
to state fact at all time. It is true that Oonirisa is not one of the children of Oduduwa. He is
Abore(Orisa priest) to Oduduwa. Though some people have said that Ooni is one
of the Orisa that Oduduwa himself worship during his life time. And Oduduwa
later make him the head over all his children and people of Ife .But to be
Sincere with you that version of history is nothing but pure lie. The true
Version is that Ooni is Abore Oduduwa(Orisa priest of Oduduwa) He is the one who
take care of and do early morning veneration of all the Orisa that Oduduwa have
and worship. In fact the name Oonirisa Ooni Orisa is derived from the word Oni hi
ji ri Orisa(the person that wake up in the morning to see and venerate Orisa). Ooni is not the title adopt by Oduduwa
during Oduduwa reign as King of Ife. The adoption of title of Ooni started
after the demise of Oduduwa. It occurs that when Oduduwa want is about to
departed from this world. None of all his children is with him again in Ile Ife.
They have gone to different location in place we now call Yoruba land to settle
as a king over their own domain. None of his children is around. Oduduwa have
no one to hand over the Ife town to than to his Abore(his high Orisa Priest)
who is Ooni. He handed over all the paraphernalia
of office to his Abore(high priest) he
gave his Ade Aare( Aare Crown) . He said
he will be the one to be standing in his stead in Ile Ife for life that is while
Ooni of Ife is been refer to as Arole
Oduduwa. That is how Ooni who is the High priest emerge on the royal throne of
Ife and entire Yoruba land. As regard the supremacy of Ooni with the genuine children
from Blood line of Oduduwa such as Alaafin of Oyo. I can authoritatively say
that Ooni is superior to these Kings base on the fact that It Is only Ooni that
have the privileges to wear the Ade Aare(Aare crown) that Oduduwa wear during
his life time. No king In Yoruba land
have access or privileged to wear the crown. In fact, The crown is not two in the
world. It is only one crown and it is only in Ile Ife that you can see it. No where
else in Yoruba land. No any Oba of Yoruba land have the privileged to wear the
Ade Aare. And Ade Are is the Original royal Crown Of Oduduwa. With due respect
to Alafin of Oyo this is how Ooni gain the custody of Other Oba In Yoruba land
been the only one that have access to wear Aare crown left behind by Oduduwa
even though he is Abore Oduduwa(High priest for Oduduwa). And that his
how subsequent king of Ife that come after him begin to adopt the title of Oonirisa.
CONTENTION ON WHO IS ABORIGINAL
OWNER OF IFE BETWEEN OLUGBO OF UGBO AND
OONI OF IFE
This
work I am putting forth are grey area that people normally afraid to discuss
because of personality involve. They do leave them to engage in their fight .Every
body is trying to safe their head while the history of this land called Yoruba
nation is getting distorted. Babalawo
Obanifa is not part of the crowd. I am different from everybody, I am Orisa
on my own accord. I can express my mind any where at any time without
intimidation from any quarters so far what I am putting forth and documenting is truth. I fear no one in
this world but Olodumare that create me and send me here. It is true that
Oduduwa that come in the third face of Ife is not the main Original Oduduwa. He
is a usurper of that name. When we discuss some things it will affect the interest
of some people, but truth need to be told ,the current Ile Ife that people are
living in today is not the Ife being refer to in most Ifa scripture. And also
the Oduduwa been refer to in most Ifa scripture is different from Odududuwa
that came to the current Ile Ife to wage war with the Aborigine there and subdue
them. In Yoruba cosmology there are three set Of Ife land. We have Ife Oodaye,Ife
Ooyelagbo, and Ile Ife. Spiritually and to been sincere with ourselves ,let be
frank and pretend that there is no religion business . let face the posterity
here, Ifa scripture only recongnises Ife Oodaye and Ife Ooyelagbo. The time of
Ile Ife have become Historical. It is only the two Ife Oodaye and Ife Ooyelagbo
that are spiritual and it only part been refer to in Ifa scriptural stanzas in in most cases, I know many people will not
like to hear this narration they are afraid to face the truth ,because that is
where their food lies. The Era that Olugbo of Ugbo land and Ooni of Ife are
clashing on is era Of Ile Ife. It has noting to do with Ife Oodaye and Ife
Ooyelagbo. I will examine each In turn.
ERA
OF IFE OODAYE
When
are talking of Ife Oodaye, the word Ife Oodaye can literally translated to mean
a large land where the world is created or expanse of land where the world is
created. It is Ife Oodaye that Ifa normally refer to when taking about creations
story not the current Ile Ife that we live today. Ife Oodaye is more of
spiritual thing and mythological. There is know how we can discuss Ife Oodaye
without discussing the myth about the creation of the world according to Yoruba
mythology. In Yoruba cosmology It is believe that at the dawn of creation. The
whole world is void and filled with water. Olodumare have thought of creating
the world. He called Obatala who is the
elder and most senior among his celestial being He gave Ewon(chain)Adiye Okoko
elese Marun(hen with five legs) and Yepe ninu karahun(sand contain in a shell.
And send him to create the world. Oral story pass down to us have it that
Obatala drink himself to stupor with
palm wine on his way to carry out this mission.Olodumare know of this and send
Oduduwa who is next in rank to Obatala to
carry out the mission of creation. That is how Oduduwa meet Obatala on the road
in state of stupor and collect the sack that contain the items from him and headed
to create the world. He descend down
from heaven through chain and pour the sand on the water. And release the hen
to scatter it. Where the hen was unable
to scatter well form mountain and hills. Where the sand did not reach form big
ocean an sea. When the sand have spread to form earth. He said o ti fe (it has expand).Ife
means expanse of land. History have it that there is still rivalry up till toady between Obatala devotees
and Oduduwa clan in term of spiritual rite in current Ile Ife up till today. It
normally occurs when they are doing their Itapa festival. But it is when
Obatala descend to the world. He is the one who mold human figure out of mud
clay and Olodumare breathe the breath of life to it.That is how Ife Oodaye was
created. It is in Ife Oodaye that Irunmole like
Obatala,Ogun ,Oranfe,Sango(not Sango they worship in Oy town ,there are another
original Sango in Odu Ifa,who is Irunmole,Sango that is popular today is Sango
Orisa he usurp the name of Original Sango Irunmole),Orunmila etc. in short Ife
Oodaye is more of spiritual entity of creation. But myth have it that there is
time that Flood cover the whole world .It wipe out the existence of Ife Oodaye.
the Irunmole and some people survive the
flood . They move and form Ife Ooyelagbo. The
question now that demand answer,is that if Ife
Ife Oodaye was wipe out by flood and they move to create Ife Ooyelaagbo. How
can we now be saying the current Ile Ife is the place where world is created.
Please I am not a Babalawo with dogma. I
am empirical. The people in tradition should try to have knowledge of what they
are teaching I think. let quickly touch Ife Ooyelagbo
IFE OOYELAGBO ERA
Ooyelagbo
simply mean the act of surviving from dying young. So Ife Ooyelagbo simply mean
the Ife of people who survive dying young. Hence it is called the Ife of the
survivor. Some o the Irunmole still exist in time of Ife Ooyelagbo. We heard in
many Ifa stanza referring to Ife Oodaye or Ife Ooyelagbo many time without
number. These two era are spiritual.
Oral tradition make it clear that Ife Ooyelagbo
exist and thrive till the coming of one another Oduduwa who is a usurper
who usurp the name of Original Oduduwa. Before the coming of the Oduduwa who usurp the name of Original Oduduwa. It is
true that Ife have their own Aborigine that live in Ife. In fact they are subdivided
into small clan and community and each clan have king of it own but there is no
any over all king, But they all look to Obatala. When Oduduwan and his troop came
as a stranger .He wage war against them(the original inhabitant) in fierce battle
which lead to blood bath. The Usurper Oduduwa and his troupe was able to subdue
the Aboringine in Ile Ife and put them under one centralize government. After
the war he establish the place called Ile Ife of today.
ILE IFE ERA
After
Oduduwa and his people have subdue the aborigine . There are some people among the subdue aborigines
who are not satisfying. They felt that
they cannot be under Oduduwa . They left Ile Ife .to establishes another domain.
It is among this aborigines that left Ile Ife after the establishment of the third
face of Ife that forefathers of Olugbo
of Ugbo belong to . It is true that that Ife Oyeelagbo exist before the current
Ile Ife. And have their aboringine. Whatever the case or history Ile Ife still
remain the recognized spiritual center of Yoruba land. I am not always happy
anytime I used the world Yoruba. I go around today seen people saying Yoruba culture,
Yoruba religion. Yoruba nation. It is irritating. There noting like Yoruba in Ifa cosmology. No single stanza
of Ifa ever mention the world Yoruba. The word Yoruba is a recent Invention
when we begin to put thing to print. It is not our name In fact the word mean
bastard(omo ale). I have wrote on it before. I explain why people of this generation must let people know
how we come about this name and while we must let our children know that that
is not our original name from the beginning. I wrote in one of my work Origin
of the word Yoruba and its meaning that ,as someone have rightly said, that the most
effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own
understanding of their history. Please never forget your history. The saying
that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it may not actually be
better in describing the case of omo Odua which we mistakenly called Yoruba up till today.
But those who forget history are doomed to wear it, that is what is applicable
in our own case in Odua land that we now regarded as Yoruba land. Yoruba is not our name from
the beginning. In fact the way foreign religion and culture was impose on us is
same way name Yoruba land was impose on us by the impriliast.Yoruba is never
our name from the beginning. Babalawo Obanifa will through the medium
of this work explain and document in detail the meaning and origin of the word
Yoruba ,how it come into existence and how it was impose on us by foreign
imperialist. I am not Yoruba, I am
Omoluabi,I am omo Odua. The name Yoruba is a
disapproving and negative word; it is a name that should not be used to
describe any race or set of people. As an one of the astute practicing Babalawo
of this century, I have taken my time to diligently and painstakingly studied
different stanza of 256 Odu Ifa scripture which is the basis of
wisdom, culture, philosopy ,medicine and spiritualty for the descendant of Odua.
I have never for seconds come across the word Yoruba in it. It seem the name is
alien to our culture and everything we represent as descendant Of Odua. Apart from
this no elders, king, spiritual leader of any sort in Yoruba land can publicly
come out to explain and give any positive meaning to the word Yoruba. The sad
part of it is that those that we can look upon for guidance on this many of them even need the kind of education
that this work is try to provide. They
don’t actually know the origin and meaning of this word Yoruba. The truth is
simple the word Yoruba have never at any point exist in the dialects and
Language of Omo Oduduwa/Omoluabi.The word Yoruba is political creation of name
by foreign religion and political invaders. It has never been our name. I have
personally interact with some deemed elders across Yoruba land as a spiritual
researcher of this Yoruba spirituality and culture ,I ask questions as to the
origin and meaning of the word Yoruba
non up till the time of compiling this
work was able to give me satisfactory
detail, some will say bi ase dele ba niyen( that is how will meet it).
When I got to Oyo town I learn from three people who elders but not literate ,
They were able to tell me that Yoruba is
not our name from the beginning and that they don’t actually known the meaning
of the word Yoruba. I went back to Ekiti many illiterate elder confirm authoritatively
that we are not Yoruba by name that they don’t even know the meaning of the
word Yoruba. They opine that before the coming into existence of this word the
descendant of Oduduwa was known by different names such as
Ife,Ekiti,Oyo,Egba, ijebu,Owu ,Yagba, and so on. And each of these division
mention have their own different mode of political administration and
sovereignty ,dialects that is different from one another, There is no any
unifying language called Yoruba as we have today. If you observe up till today dialect of Egba,is different from
Oyo,that of Oyo is different from Ekiti, that of ekiti is different from Ife.
And so on. People from Ekiti made me to known in my research that the name
Yoruba was impose on them and other political divisions mention earlier by Old Oyo empire when Oyo empire assume military and political supremacy over
the administration of all other political divisions mentioned. Oyo Empire was able to achieve
this through their military strength and tribal war. This is what make me to
continue in my research to find the meaning of the word Yoruba that none of
aged illiterate elders can find meaning
to or proof that it has having meaning in our culture.
In my course of personal
study and research I actually find out the truth. I find out that before 16th
century that the descendant of Oduduwa that we now popular called the Yoruba
today are either known as
Ife,Ekiti,Oyo,Egba, ijebu,Owu ,Yagba, and so on , and they refer to themselves
as Omo odua. History has it that before this 16 century and the rise of old Oyo
empire to become political capital of Yoruba land, the Fulani and Hausa have
been having trade and business interaction with the people of Oyo and Ibadan.
They sense that Oyo and Ibadan have a
very good bargaining and negotiating
skill set of trade by barter that do make the Fulani and Hausa lose out
to them , They do feel cheated as a
result they are the first set of people to called us Yariba or Yaribansa which literarily translated to
mean a bastard. The using of the word over the year consequently
culminated into the word Yoruba. Non of
the descendant of Odua accept the name. The name Yoruba first come to
prominence when a popular scholar of the 16th century known by
the name Ahmed Baba al Massufi was the first person to use the word to describe
the people of Oyo and Ibadan. The word
Yoruba is restricted to the two tribes of Oduduwa then because that is the set
of people that Fulani and Hausa have the
cause of transacting business with then
. However the using of the using of the word to refer the whole descendant of
Oduduwa come as a result of colonialism and imperialism, as explain by Professor Ade Ajayi’s book “Yoruba
Warfare in the Nineteenth century” where he insisted that, during the indirect rule era, it was
necessary for the imperialists to give a unique name to the entire towns and
people who spoke Yoruba language. Somehow, they settled for Yoruba. Yoruba is a
deviation of Yariba which the Yoruba people of that century rejected. The
Ijebu, Ijesa and Egba rejected this name vehemently but because during the
Kiriji war (the Yoruba civil war) where the collapse of Oyo Empire commenced
and the signaling factor the imperialists used to prompt the rule over Oyo from
covers. The name Yoruba was foisted on Oyo and Ibadan mainly on documents and
slowly the name Yoruba was enshrined in our culture and hence, our appellation
The name gradually gain
prominence due to political imposition of it on our forefather, majority of
them who are illiterate and ignorance of
what the name mean. The Egba people then with some level of enlightenment and
spirit of nationalism refuse to accept and answer the name Yoruba. There is
concrete evidence to this because the first first newspaper published in Yoruba
land in 1859, was named as Iwe Iroyin Fun Ara Egba Ati Yoruba(
That is the newspaper for Egba and Yoruba). So as at 1859 it is not every
descendant of Odua that have accept this politically impose name on us by
foreign invaders. It is when the name now gain prominence that every body now
embrace it.Yoruba is never our name from the beginning.
What is wrong with this name ,
It is one thing for someone to give you a name ,It is another thing for the name to
be good. In our own case both the giver and the name given are not good. A look
at some of the meanings given to the word by previous scholars testified to it that the name Yoruba have disapproving
and derogatory meanings .Dr Taiwo Ayanbolu in one of
his thesis claimed he found the definition of the word Yoruba at York Museum in
England dating to the 19th century, he
said Yoruba is a name derived from Hausa language Yariba which means deceit. As this is not enough,
Yoruba dictionary written by Bishop
Samuel Ajayi Crowther which defines ‘Yariba’ as a bastard and deceitful person.
The fact remain that few literate people
available at this period like bishop Ajayi Crowder,Rev Samuel Johnson, Dr
Obadiah Johnson are returning Yoruba
slaves elite. They are the one who form linguistic structure known as Yoruba
language today into existence and is meant to promote and advance foreign
religion majorly Christianity then. They think having one unify language will
enhance easy spread of their mission.
At the beginning we are
actually known as s Omo Kaaro Ojiire,
Omo Odua, Omo Oduduwa or Omoluabi. I actually known that this work can
make little impact on this name since it has now been globally recognize as our
name .But the truth need to be reveals but
we still need to set the record straight for the future and elders who don’t
known we must make them to known as well we are Omo Kaaro Ojiire, Omo Odua, Omo Oduduwa or Omoluabi we are not
Yoruba.

SIGNIFICADO DE OONI OF IFE (OONIRISA) E SUA POSIÇÃO NA TERRA DE YORUBA POR BABALAWO OBANIFA-Obanifa documentários extremos

E Ade Are é a coroa real original de Oduduwa.

O nome ganha gradualmente destaque devido à imposição política dele em nosso antepassado, a maioria deles analfabetos e ignorância do significado do nome.
