HERBAL AND IFA MEDICINE FOR TREATMENT OF LACK OF MENSTRUATION IN WOMEN(AMENORRHEA) BY BABALAWO OBANIFA Vol 3. Obanifa extreme documentaries
In this work Babalawo Obanifa will
document varieties of herbal and Ifa medicine available in Yoruba herbal
medicine and spirituality for the treatment of lack of menstruation in women (Amenorrhea)
. The traditional nomenclature uses for herbal formulae used in treating Amenorrhea
in Yoruba herbal medicine is known as Ogun Ase.Oogun Alase( Ase/Nkan Osu is
traditional Yoruba name for menstruation). The nomenclature use for Ifa
medicine for the treatment of Amenorrhea In Yoruba Ifa spirituality is known as
Akose Ifa Alase(Ifa medicine to treat Amenorrhea ).So in this work, We
are going to document in detail both the Herbal and spiritual formula available
for the treatment of lack of menstruation in women. Before we delve into our documentation it is
good if we have detail knowledge of what we mean by lack of menstruation in
women(Amenorrhea). In attempt to do justice to this we will rely on the explanations
and information make available on this by qualified trained health practitioners
and medical authors in field of orthodox medicine. It is instructive for any
student on my herbal medicine course or general public who have access to this
work not to regard medical information make available in this work as a substitute
to the service of trained, qualified medical or health practitioners where the
service of one is required. I must also stress it here that varieties of herbal
and spiritual formula that will be document at the end of this work have prove
to be a very potent and effective in curing lack of menstruation over the years
in Yoruba herbal medicine and they are still effective up till today. In this
work Obanifa document 19 different herbal and spiritual formulae for treatment
of Amenorrhea, Under herbal medicines I document 15 (fifteen) different herbal
formula that have been use for effective cure of Amenorrhea in Yoruba herbal
medicine for centuries, Under Akose Ifa (Ifa medicine) I document 4(four) different
Ifa medicine that Babalawo over the centuries have always use to cure Amenorrhea.
What then is lack of Menstruation(Amenorrhea). Amenorrhea (uh-men-o-REE-uh) is
the absence of menstruation — one or more missed menstrual periods. Women who
have missed at least three menstrual periods in a row have amenorrhea, as do
girls who haven't begun menstruation by age 15.(definition source, Mayo
clinic). Amenorrhea means an absence of menstruation. The term also applies to
people who have not started their period by the age of 16, which is called
primary amenorrhea. Secondary amenorrhea occurs in people who have missed 3
months of periods.(this second definition is according to Lana Burgess, in his
work what causes absence of menstruation). He also explains Amenorrhea further
in that work that ,A period, or menstrual bleeding, is the womb lining exiting
the body. Amenorrhea is the absence of
menstrual bleeding. During the menstrual cycle, hormones cause an ovary to
produce and release an egg. The ovary also releases the hormones estrogen and
progesterone.
Estrogen primarily causes the womb lining to
thicken, while progesterone prepares the womb for the implantation of an egg. If
no sperm fertilizes the egg, pregnancy does not occur, and the egg dissolves.
The levels of estrogen and progesterone decline, and the womb lining falls
away. It leaves the body through the vagina, giving the person a period. If a
female reaches the age of 16 without any periods,
this is called primary amenorrhea.
Sometimes a person will have no menstrual
bleeding for more than three cycles despite having had regular periods until
then. If there is no natural cause for this, such as pregnancy, they have
secondary amenorrhea. Secondary amenorrhea occurs in approximately 3–5
percent of adult women. (This second explanations is according to Lana
Burgess). Having know what lack of menstruation mean in women ,We will know
proceed to know what are the likely causes if lack of menstruation in women.
CAUSES OF LACK OF PERIOD (AMENORRHEA )
In having comprehensive knowledge of what are the causes of lack of menstruation (Amenorrhea
) we shall examine and compare and contrast the work of Mayo Clinic Staff with
the work of Lana Burgess on what are the likely causes of Amenorrhea. Lana
Burgess seem to have the most self-explanatory and comprehensive explanation on
this. But we will examine the two in seriatim ,because they are the one who
have the leading explanation on this.
According to Mayo Clinic. The most common cause
of amenorrhea is pregnancy. Other causes of amenorrhea include problems with
the reproductive organs or with the glands that help regulate hormone levels.
Treatment of the underlying condition often resolves amenorrhea. Amenorrhea can
occur for a variety of reasons. Some are normal during the course of a woman's
life, while others may be a side effect of medication or a sign of a medical
problem.
Natural amenorrhea
During the normal course of your life, you may
experience amenorrhea for natural reasons, such as:
- Pregnancy
- Breast-feeding
- Menopause
Contraceptives
Some women who take birth control pills may not
have periods. Even after stopping oral contraceptives, it may take some time
before regular ovulation and menstruation return. Contraceptives that are
injected or implanted also may cause amenorrhea, as can some types of
intrauterine devices.
Medications
Certain medications can cause menstrual periods
to stop, including some types of:
- Antipsychotics
- Cancer chemotherapy
- Antidepressants
- Blood pressure drugs
- Allergy medications
Lifestyle factors
Sometimes lifestyle factors contribute to
amenorrhea, for instance:
- Low body weight. Excessively low body weight — about 10 percent under normal weight — interrupts many hormonal functions in your body, potentially halting ovulation. Women who have an eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia, often stop having periods because of these abnormal hormonal changes.
- Excessive exercise. Women who participate in activities that require rigorous training, such as ballet, may find their menstrual cycles interrupted. Several factors combine to contribute to the loss of periods in athletes, including low body fat, stress and high energy expenditure.
- Stress. Mental stress can temporarily alter the functioning of your hypothalamus — an area of your brain that controls the hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle. Ovulation and menstruation may stop as a result. Regular menstrual periods usually resume after your stress decreases.
Hormonal imbalance
Many types of medical problems can cause hormonal
imbalance, including:
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). PCOS causes relatively high and sustained levels of hormones, rather than the fluctuating levels seen in the normal menstrual cycle.
- Thyroid malfunction. An overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) can cause menstrual irregularities, including amenorrhea.
- Pituitary tumor. A noncancerous (benign) tumor in your pituitary gland can interfere with the hormonal regulation of menstruation.
- Premature menopause. Menopause usually begins around age 50. But, for some women, the ovarian supply of eggs diminishes before age 40, and menstruation stops.
Structural problems
Problems with the sexual organs themselves also can
cause amenorrhea. Examples include:
- Uterine scarring. Asherman's syndrome, a condition in which scar tissue builds up in the lining of the uterus, can sometimes occur after a dilation and curettage (D&C), cesarean section or treatment for uterine fibroids. Uterine scarring prevents the normal buildup and shedding of the uterine lining.
- Lack of reproductive organs. Sometimes problems arise during fetal development that lead to a girl being born without some major part of her reproductive system, such as her uterus, cervix or vagina. Because her reproductive system didn't develop normally, she can't have menstrual cycles.
- Structural abnormality of the vagina. An obstruction of the vagina may prevent visible menstrual bleeding. A membrane or wall may be present in the vagina that blocks the outflow of blood from the uterus and cervix.
Lana Burgess on
his offer detail deep explanation ,he
explain that Amenorrhea can be cause by natural and unnatural factors. He
wrote that ,natural causes of amenorrhea include pregnancy,
breastfeeding, and menopause. In these
cases, there is no need to see a doctor.
When
a person has regular menstrual bleeding, this means that the ovaries, uterus,
hypothalamus, and pituitary gland are working well.
The
absence of menstruation can indicate a problem with one of these parts of the
body, or there may be an abnormality of the genital tract. Lifestyle factors,
an underlying health condition, and some medications can also cause amenorrhea.
Possible
causes of an absence of menstruation include:
1.
Birth control
Some
birth control pills may
cause missed periods or the complete absence of menstruation.
This
can occur in the first few months of taking a new pill or if a person does not
take any placebo pills or have a
pill-free week each month.
Some
of the other birth control methods, such as the hormonal intrauterine device
(IUD), implant, and injection can also result in amenorrhea.
2.
Nutritional deficiencies
Malnutrition may affect how the
hypothalamus and pituitary gland function, which can lead to amenorrhea.
3.
Low body weight
Having
a low body weight can also prevent the hypothalamus
and pituitary gland from functioning correctly. This can lead to a type of
amenorrhea known as functional
hypothalamic amenorrhea.
4.
Stress
Stress can affect hormone
levels in the body, and it is another cause of functional hypothalamic
amenorrhea. People with this type of amenorrhea also have higher
rates of depression and anxiety.
5.
Excessive exercise
Excessive
exercise is the third cause of functional hypothalamic amenorrhea. Some research
estimates that half of the women who exercise regularly experience minor
menstrual disorders.
6.
Eating disorders
Having
an eating disorder, such as anorexia or bulimia, may cause a person's
periods to stop. This absence of menstruation is usually due to a nutritional
deficiency or very low body weight.
7.
Excessive weight gain
Rapidly
gaining weight can cause a hormonal imbalance, which can lead to temporary
amenorrhea.
8.
Mental health medications
Some
antidepressants and mood stabilizers may
affect how the hypothalamus and pituitary gland work. If they are not producing
the right levels of hormones, a person's periods may stop.
9.
Polycystic ovary syndrome
Polycystic
ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects 6–8
percent of women worldwide.
PCOS
causes a range of symptoms including:
- irregular periods
- excessive hair growth
- difficulty getting pregnant
- weight gain
- acne
PCOS
may also lead to hyperandrogenemia, which is when a female has high levels of
male hormones. A 2017 study of 266 women with PCOS found that over 78
percent of them had hyperandrogenemia.
Hyperandrogenemia
may affect menstrual cycles and lead to amenorrhea.
10.
Premature ovarian failure
Premature
ovarian failure is when the ovaries stop working correctly before the age of 40.
This
condition may lead to missed periods. However, it is not the same as early
menopause, which is when menstruation stops completely.
11.
Turner syndrome
Turner
syndrome is a genetic disorder. People with this condition may have
underdeveloped ovaries and an absence of menstruation.
12.
Genital tract defects
Genital
tract defects are structural problems that can cause an absence of menstruation
or make it difficult for the menstrual blood to exit the vagina.
The
most
common female genital tract defect is an imperforate hymen, which is a
hymen with no opening that closes off the vagina and does not allow blood to
leave it during a period.
13.
Pituitary gland problems
The
pituitary gland releases the hormones that control the menstrual cycle. Issues
with the pituitary gland, including those below, may lead to amenorrhea:
- a pituitary gland tumor
- postpartum necrosis, which is the premature death of cells in the pituitary gland after pregnancy
- sarcoidosis, which is an inflammatory condition
Radiation therapy may also
affect cells in the pituitary gland and cause amenorrhea.
Symptoms of Amenorrehea
Mayon
clinic staff in their own work have identify below listed conditions as
symptoms of Amenorrhea. The main sign of amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual
periods. Depending on the cause of amenorrhea, you might experience other signs
or symptoms along with the absence of periods, such as:
- Milky nipple discharge
- Hair loss
- Headache
- Vision changes
- Excess facial hair
- Pelvic pain
- Acne
When to see a doctor
People
who miss three periods in a row but are not pregnant or likely to be entering
menopause should see a doctor. This is especially important if they are
experiencing additional symptoms.
People
who have not started menstruating by the age of 16 should also speak to a
doctor.
Treatment
Yoga, mindfulness, and meditation
can help to manage stress.
A
doctor will recommend the best course of treatment for amenorrhea after
diagnosing its underlying cause.
Primary
amenorrhea is often due to late puberty, which usually resolves over
time. However, a doctor can help determine if there is another underlying cause
for periods not beginning. If a hormonal imbalance is responsible, the doctor
may prescribe hormonal therapy.
The
causes of functional hypothalamic amenorrhea may require lifestyle changes:
- Low body weight: A doctor may refer an underweight person to a nutritionist who can help them adjust their diet to reach a healthy weight.
- Stress: Finding ways to manage stress, such as yoga, mindfulness, meditation, or seeing a therapist, may be beneficial.
- Excessive exercise: The doctor may recommend a moderate exercise regime.
If
a person has amenorrhea due to rapid weight gain, the doctor is likely to
recommend a calorie-controlled diet and exercise.
In
cases where amenorrhea develops due to a structural problem, surgery and an
individualized treatment plan may be necessary.
Outlook
Most
causes of absence of menstruation are treatable. Following the treatment plan
that a doctor recommends can help many people with amenorrhea regain a regular
menstrual cycle.
Diagnosis
During your appointment, your doctor will perform
a pelvic exam to check for any problems with your reproductive organs. If
you've never had a period, your doctor may examine your breasts and genitals to
see if you're experiencing the normal changes of puberty.
Amenorrhea can be a sign of a complex set of
hormonal problems. Finding the underlying cause can take time and may require
more than one kind of testing.
Lab tests
A variety of blood tests may be necessary,
including:
- Pregnancy test. This will probably be the first test your doctor suggests, to rule out or confirm a possible pregnancy.
- Thyroid function test. Measuring the amount of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood can determine if your thyroid is working properly.
- Ovary function test. Measuring the amount of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in your blood can determine if your ovaries are working properly.
- Prolactin test. Low levels of the hormone prolactin may be a sign of a pituitary gland tumor.
- Male hormone test. If you're experiencing increased facial hair and a lowered voice, your doctor may want to check the level of male hormones in your blood.
Hormone challenge test
For this test, you take a hormonal medication for
seven to 10 days to trigger menstrual bleeding. Results from this test can tell
your doctor whether your periods have stopped due to a lack of estrogen.
Imaging tests
Depending on your signs and symptoms — and the result
of any blood tests you've had — your doctor might recommend one or more imaging
tests, including:
- Ultrasound. This test uses sound waves to produce images of internal organs. If you have never had a period, your doctor may suggest an ultrasound test to check for any abnormalities in your reproductive organs.
- Computerized tomography (CT). CT scans combine many X-ray images taken from different directions to create cross-sectional views of internal structures. A CT scan can indicate whether your uterus, ovaries and kidneys look normal.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI uses radio waves with a strong magnetic field to produce exceptionally detailed images of soft tissues within the body. Your doctor may order an MRI to check for a pituitary tumor.
Scope tests
If other testing reveals no specific cause, your
doctor may recommend a hysteroscopy — a test in which a thin, lighted camera is
passed through your vagina and cervix to look at the inside of your uterus.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the underlying cause of your
amenorrhea. In some cases, contraceptive pills or other hormone therapies can
restart your menstrual cycles. Amenorrhea caused by thyroid or pituitary
disorders may be treated with medications. If a tumor or structural blockage is
causing the problem, surgery may be necessary.
Lifestyle and home remedies
Some lifestyle factors — such as too much exercise
or too little food — can cause amenorrhea, so strive for balance in work,
recreation and rest. Assess areas of stress and conflict in your life. If you
can't decrease stress on your own, ask for help from family, friends or your
doctor.
Be aware of changes in your menstrual cycle and
check with your doctor if you have concerns. Keep a record of when your periods
occur. Note the date your period starts, how long it lasts and any troublesome
symptoms you experience.
Preparing for your appointment
Your first appointment will likely be with your
primary care physician or gynecologist.
Here's some information to help you prepare for
your appointment and know what to expect from your doctor.
What you can do
To get ready for your appointment:
- Write down details about your symptoms, including when they started and the date and duration of your last period, if you know when your last period was.
- Make note of key medical information, including other conditions for which you're being treated and the names and dosages of any medications, vitamins or supplements you regularly take.
- Review your family history, checking to see whether your mother or any sisters have also had menstrual problems.
- Write down questions to ask your doctor, listing the most important ones first in case time runs short.
For amenorrhea, some basic questions to ask your
doctor include:
- What might be causing me to miss my periods?
- Do I need any tests? How should I prepare for those tests?
- What treatments are available? Which do you recommend for me?
- Do you have any informational brochures on this topic? What websites do you recommend?
What to expect from your doctor
Your doctor will likely ask you a number of
questions, such as:
- When was your last period?
- Are you sexually active?
- Could you be pregnant?
- Do you use birth control?
- Are you under any stress?
- Have you experienced unexplained weight gain or weight loss?
- How often and how intensely do you exercise?
- Do you have any other medical conditions?
