Many a time I hear from people asking me, Babalawo Obanifa I have been initiated for some years now but I am not still getting things right, My Oluwo is Araba of so and so town. I spend so and so amount on my initiation. I have done all Akose ifa still things are not working. I have received all the Orisa for my head.  I think since I have Ifa I can do what I like. Is Ifa not working for me? Some will even be said Obanifa I am a practicing Babalawo When I make Ebo for people it is not accept, I can not make ebo for myself. Ifa ought to protect me from all the dangers etc. I can go on and on all these meaningful but frivolous question from different people. But in this short work I explain what Ifa initiation actual mean and what it guarantees. It is true that ifa initiation will make become successful, protected from enemies and have a problem free life. But this does not come cheap as you think. It come with price and discipline and modification of your character to conform with the will of Olodumare.  Ifa initiation odes not guarantee you protection from consequence of anti-social behavior such as adultery, cheating, disrespect for elders, taking uncalculated physical risk, breaking of taboos, self-inflicted enmity and crises due to ego, Disobedience of law and order in the society, engaging in conspiracy against your fellow human being to cause their downfall etc.  When you are doing all these aforementioned, I doubt whether Ifa initiation will offer you protections or any spiritual immunity. Ifa initiation is not spiritual immunity against anti-social behavior rather Ifa initiation place responsibility on the new initiate to become a good, wise, well behave man that his character conforms with acceptable standard set by Olodumare (God) and that of the society where he/she reside. Rather than Ifa initiation symbolize spiritual rebirth of character from bad to good, evolve from lack of knowledge and wisdom to wisdom. Ifa initiation is about becoming a change person both in character and wisdom. Lack of positive character transformation after the initiation process on the part of the initiate who undergo Itelodu is deemed  to be a character transformation failure.

After Ifa initiation Odu Ifa teaches us that, that an initiate should re -initiate him/herself  by cultivating good habits, he or she should try to seek knowledge, be more prudent and thoughtful than ever. Ifa initiation is meant to bring comfort to the initiate not hardship so, an Ifa  initiate must learn how to avoid all taboo and social vices. That is when The initiate can be say to have a spiritual rebirth or as re-initiate himself or herself in term of character and values. On this see what odu Ifa Ogbe Irete clearly state some things that Ifa initiate must avoid such as:

The new initiate must avoid telling lies either to his Oluwo or people who can help him

He must never bring dispute, fights, or matter that have been previously settle back to life.

He must never snatch wife or take away spouse of other person

He must not sleep with the wife of co – initiate

You must not have sexual affair with wife of your friend or conspire with her against your friend, same thing apply to woman

He must not sleep with wife herbalist

He must never sleep with wife of priest

He or she must avoid breaking the taboo of his odu ifa,taboo of his family or town

He must avoid taking un-calculated risk, such as exposing your self to danger such climbing tall tree without belt or swimming in the ocean etc.

Translation

Ogbe come and be initiated to Ifa so that you can have peace of mind

To have your hand of Ifa and subsequently undergo ifa initiation is the  reproach of Ifa

I received hand of Ifa

And I was subsequently initiated by my father

It is  their lack of wisdom

It is  their lack of deep thoughts

This is what make then enter Igbodu(ifa initiation grove) for three consecutive times to seek ifa initiation

After someone have undergone ifa initiation

One need take the issue of Esu Odara very seriously

After one has undergoe ifa initiation

One must not make love to the wife of fellow Awo

One must not snatch the wife of herbalist

One must nit take the wife of abore(orisa preist) to secret place to make love to her

One must not conspires with the wife of the person  you make covenant to harm them

One must not lies to his Oluwo

Any matter that have been previously settle one must not raise it up again

It is Orunmila that initiate Akoda

It is Orunmila that initiate Aseda

It is Orunmila that initiate Araba

It is only Orunmila that we don’t known who initiate him

I have been initiated to ifa

I will re-initiate myself

I will avoid all taboo mention to me

I have been initiated to ifa

I will re-initiate myself.
